Sep 26 - The Stand-Up: A Live Comedy Show w/ Musical Finale

Backdrop Comedy returns to Askew Providence with an all new lineup for it's September show! Hosted by Derek K. Moore, the night will be headlined by the hilarity of Derek Furtado and features Sarah Martin w/ special guest Liani Perez.

Derek Furtado's ability to make people laugh helped him adapt to the life of a military brat and later settling in Massachusetts where he began an official career in stand-up comedy. From the very first joke to the end of his set, there aren't any crowds Derek can't win over. Sporting a movie star smile and devilish charm, Derek captivates the audience with not only his comedy, but his interaction with the crowd. With his material ranging from his sexual escapades to being assaulted by a senior citizen outside of a bingo parking lot, Derek has a way of appealing to all audiences.

Sarah Martin is one of the leading ladies of comedy out of Boston, MA. A woman, but certainly not a lady. Sarah gives her sardonic perspective on life with some extra sass. Using her vitality and dry wit she has been building a name for herself in the comedy world by being real and a riot!

With special guest Liani Perez!

After the Showcase, stick around for the hysterical Texas band: Jesse & the Hogg Brothers!!!

Sep 26 - Jesse & the Hogg Brothers

This Thursday is a night of Comedy & Music…. Come down early & catch the Backdrop Comedy Showcase from 8-10pm, then stick around for the wildly hysterical Texas band: Jesse & the Hogg Brothers!

If this was just a band making white trash jokes and wearing Billy Bob teeth and using fake twangs this might suck. But the beauty of the Hoggs ( who are not above white trash jokes, Billy Bob teeth and fake twangs) is that they are also making super earnest country music, old time stuff, including CB trucking songs, odes to America, and Christmas songs on both albums. If you can't get enough of the crude Southerner comedy (and a zillion Larry The Cable Guy fans can't be wrong) meets 1968 Opry music then get both CD's.

“This is a tight group of musicians, attacking bluegrass & Southern rock sounds with both a ferocious irreverence & a deep respect for musicality. The combination is both oddly charming and outrageously funny.” -Victor D. Infante, Telegram & Gazette

Sep 22 - John Allmark Super Jazz Octet

The John Allmark Jazz Orchestra has been at the forefront of Rhode Island Jazz for almost 29 years now. During that time it has deservedly earned a reputation as one of the countries finest jazz ensembles.
The band still performs bi-monthly at the Met Cafe in Pawtucket but it's legacy continues to grow with the formation of the John Allmark Super Jazz Octet in 2017.
This stellar eight piece ensemble gives British trumpeter John Allmark a new platform to showcase his writing and arranging skills whilst featuring an all-star line-up of the very best jazz musicians that New England has to offer.
Askew is thrilled to welcome back this powerhouse unit and invites you again to be part of another very exciting and memorable evening.

8:30pm - Greg Sherrod Music Company kicks off the nostalgic PVD Jam Session, which originated in this very room when it was Century Lounge many moons ago…. Greg invites many talented, renowned artists to join him in this prestigious Jam Night.

GREG SHERROD -has been singing his whole life, entertaining audiences throughout New England. Greg spent many years in musical theater, starring in productions like Jesus Christ Superstar (Judas) and Nunsence (Sister Hubert), and being involved in Dandelion Children's Theater. Greg has taken the stage with bands like The Clarke Brothers, Powerhouse, Sugar Daddy, and The Highrollers. Greg has also supported and played with acts like Tower of Power, John Cafferty and The Beaver Brown Band, King's X, Deep Banana Blackout, E.C. Scott, K.D. Bell, and James Montgomery. This experience allowed Greg the opportunity to share the stage with Michael Bolton, Patti LaBelle, Nick Lachey, Blake Shelton, and Kelly Rowland. While working on "Clash of The Choirs," Greg sang back-up for Michael Bolton's performance of "When a Man Loves a Woman" and was part of a sight-reading and fast-study group hand-picked from each choir for a live performance on NBC's "The Today Show" featuring Gloria Estefan.
Greg has performed at The Fairfield Theater Co in Fairfield, Connecticut as part of the Band Together Charity Concert series. Greg has been the featured singer in the popular wedding/function band, Mass Conn Fusion, as well as a regular performer at both The Mohegan Sun Casino and Foxwoods Resort Casino.
